John Andree, (1697/8–1785), physician, was the co-founder of the London Hospital. "During his life he was best-known as the physician who extolled the medicinal properties of the alterative water derived from a particular well in the village of West Tilbury, Essex. His tract An Account of the Tilbury Water (1737) remained in print for half a century; the water was promoted as a 'true specifick' for diarrhoeas and all kinds of fluxes, and was considered to be 'fitted by nature to absorb and correct the acrimonious contents of the stomach and bowels'."—(ODNB).
